My Adult Job
Working as an Executive Officer to a General Officer at the Pentagon certainly feels like an adult job. On one of the not-so-calm metro rides home, I wrote down a few thoughts about this crazy experience.
1. General Officers don’t take NO for an answer (unless it’s unlawful, unethical or illegal)....which means you don’t either 😂
2. HOT taskers. The Pentagon operates like a war zone, but instead of bombs, we get quick-turn projects and tasks. 💣
3. Working half days is a way of life. That is, working from 7 am to at least 7 pm ⏰
4. Feedback. Probably one of the most painful parts. But stolen from a pastor, I am learning to listen for what is true, and give it to God 🙏
5. Strategic mindset. Even your lunch is strategic (if you make time for it!) 🤨🍕
6. Little victories. You get SO excited when you find out a calendar trick or discover a notepad you like. I mean serious joy 🎊
7. Cat herding skills. Organizing schedules, telecoms, meetings, travel, speeches, briefings and events and trying to find you boss in a maze of 25,000 people. It looks like this: https://youtu.be/PZ0ur5GKC0w. 🐈
8. The frantic face. That moment when you realize you cannot hide your expression and you feel alone and very afraid. Typically others respond by giving you an Venti Starbucks ☕️
And last but certainly the most important,
9. Dream Team. The group of people (you guys!) that support you. They pray, laugh, cry, eat, run, etc. Thank you for being the best part of my life. ❤️
With Love,
Liz
